National Vision Inc. has announced the three winners of its 2015-2016 grant program:
• First place: Vy Pham, NOVA Southeastern College of Optometry, Class of 2017
• Runner-up: Emma Budraitis, University of Alabama Birmingham, Class of 2016
• Runner-up: Francesca Sefton, New England College of Optometry, Class of 2017
To compete for the grant awards, third- and fourth-year optometry students from across the United States submitted an essay or video describing their perspectives on the need for affordable, primary eye care in today’s changing healthcare environment. The first-place winner receives $5,000, and the runners-up receive $1,000.
According to Alex Louw, National Vision’s Senior Vice President, Professional Services, “It’s essential that this next generation of eyecare professionals understands how important affordable, primary care optometry is in our communities. The winning submissions truly showed an understanding of the barriers people face when it comes to accessing eye care and encouragingly proved that they are prepared to take responsibility in combating these barriers in their future careers.”
