ASCO to be Represented at Second IOM Global Forum Workshop

IOMOn behalf of ASCO, Dr. Linda Casser, Professor, Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University, has submitted abstracts for a webcast and poster presentation to the Institute of Medicine’s Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education. The abstracts have been accepted and will be published components of the Forum’s next workshop, Scaling Up Best Practices in Community-Based Health Professional Education, which takes place May 1-2 in Washington, D.C. The abstracts highlight examples of community-based interprofessional initiatives by two ASCO member institutions:

• Timpone C, Smythe J. The Pacific University Interprofessional Diabetes Clinic: A Community-Based Health Care Initiative Involving a Member Institution of the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry. Webcast presenter: Casser L.

• Casser L, Vitek M, Pendley V. Family Medicine Residents, Optometry Students, and Faculty Members Engaged in Health Professions Education and Collaborative Patient Care: An Example of a Community-Based Interprofessional Initiative by a Member Institution of the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry.

In 2013, ASCO became a member/sponsor of the Forum, which aims to apply an ongoing, multinational, multidisciplinary approach to exploring promising innovations in health education. Dr. Casser represented ASCO at the Forum’s October 2013 workshop as well. The Forum’s emphasis on interprofessional education (IPE) is consistent with ASCO’s focus on IPE, which President Dr. Jennifer Smythe set as a 2013-2014 priority.
