Dr. William Baldwin

The flag at the University of Houston College of Optometry (UHCO) flew at half-staff for a week this February in honor of Dr. William Baldwin, the former longtime Dean who passed away at age 87. Dr. Baldwin served as UHCO Dean from 1979 to 1990.

According to an article written by Lisa Merkl, Office of University Communication, Dr. Baldwin was known as “a consummate academic, a principled individual and a man of high ideals.” His list of accomplishments is lengthy, as reflected by his 2011 induction into the National Optometry Hall of Fame. Dr. Baldwin served on the ASCO Board and as its President from 1974 to 1976. Prior to his time at UHCO, he was Dean of the Pacific University College of Optometry and President of the New England College of Optometry.

Those wishing to make a contribution in his honor may do so to UHCO’s Dr. William R. Baldwin Scholarship.

Also: UHCO Interim Dean and CFO Dr. Roger Boltz was inducted into the University of Houston chapter of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. Dr. Pat Segu, UHCO Clinical Associate Professor and Director of the Good Neighbor Eye Clinic, won the 2013-2014 University of Houston Teaching Excellence Award in the category of Community Engagement.
