ASCOs Leadership Development Implementation Task Force successfully launched the Optometric Education Leadership Institute (OELI), which is an initiative aimed at addressing ASCOs strategic objective of establishing and promoting career and leadership development programs for faculty, administrators, residents, and students.
  
Eighteen residents and graduate students from eleven schools and colleges of optometry attended the 5th biennial Future Faculty Program (FFP), a program designed to prepare participants for securing and excelling in faculty positions.
A special symposium slated for Academy 2020 (Nashville, TN), the first of its kind ever presented at an American Academy of Optometry (AAO) annual meeting, and co-presented by the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry, the National Optometric Association (NOA), and the Academy, will promote a basic understanding of the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion as they pertain to optometric education and clinical practice.
The number of residency slots affiliated with member schools in the U.S. rose 6% from AY 2016-17 to AY 2018-19, and 64% since 2008-09, according to ASCO’s 2018-19 Residency Program Funding and Promotion Survey report, released in December.

The Presidential Leadership Scholars (PLS) program announced that Josephine Owoeye, OD, assistant dean for student and professional development at the University of Pikeville – Kentucky College of Optometry, has been selected as one of the 60 Scholars chosen for the program’s sixth annual class.
Darnel James ‘23OD is the historian for the University’s National Optometric Student Association (NOSA), and as such, historical perspective is important to him.
