Algernon Phillips, OD ‘69, MD, Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) alumni and trailblazer for PCO/Salus University’s commitment to global service passed away on December 29, 2023.
 
Community Eye Care (CEC), the UAB School of Optometry’s community outreach arm, celebrated 50 years of providing vision screenings and comprehensive eyecare to underserved communities while training future optometrists to provide compassionate care. To date, the program has cared for approximately 25,000 patients.
 
About a dozen Midwestern University students from the Arizona College of Optometry (AZCOPT) and members of the University chapter of Student Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (SVOSH) assisted close to 185 refugees from Afghanistan, Latin America, Ukraine, and several parts of Africa with their eye care last fall.
 
This winter, a group of 13 optometry students (three first year students and 10 second year students) from the Herbert Wertheim School of Optometry & Vision Science joined the Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (VOSH) Connecticut chapter for their annual vision clinic in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua to provide free eye care services for local residents. This year marks 20 years of the clinic!

Raman Badh ‘26OD, a second-year student at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University, is one of 18 current optometry students from across the country named to the Women in Optometry student advisory board.
 
Gerard (Gerry) O’Sullivan, PhD, joined the Salus University family in March of 2023 as interim provost and vice president of Academic Affairs after the retirement of Dr. Barry Eckert.
 
Southern College of Optometry’s Board of Trustees has selected Dr. Fred Farias III and Dave Sattler as recipients of honorary degrees to be presented during the college’s 2024 commencement ceremony.
