Dr. Ian L. Bailey

In honor of Dr. Ian L. Bailey, an international authority in the field of low vision who recently retired from his faculty position at the University of California – Berkeley School of Optometry (UCB), Berkeley Optometry’s low vision residency program has been named The Ian L. Bailey Low Vision Residency, and an endowment fund has been established to maintain it.

Dr. Bailey has made significant contributions to vision science, including co-developing the Bailey-Lovie logMAR Chart, an eye chart that is a gold standard for measuring visual acuity. He also helped to introduce the Berkeley Rudimentary Vision Test for quantifying and monitoring the eyesight of patients with poor vision.

The endowment fund is in line with the UCB priority of increasing private support for Berkeley Optometry’s clinical and residency programs. Individuals and organizations can contribute by sending a check made out to The Ian L. Bailey Low Vision Residency Program Fund to Berkeley Optometry, 397 Minor Hall, Berkeley, CA  94720.
