Toric Contact Lenses Improved Visual QofL in Study

JnJ_VisionCare_Inc_logoJohnson & Johnson Vision Care Inc. recently presented data from a study showing that 1-Day Acuvue Moist Brand Contact Lenses for astigmatism [etafilcon A toric soft contact lenses (TCLs)] resulted in significant improvements in quality of life (QoL) measures compared with its spherical soft contact lens (SCL) counterpart for patients with astigmatism.

Researchers fitted 60 current SCL wearers age 18-45 with -0.75 to 1.75DC binocularly with a SCL and its toric counterpart for one week each. A validated patient-reported outcomes questionnaire was used to assess the lenses’ impact on vision-specific QoL, fitting time and success.

Results showed improved visual QoL scores for patients wearing TCL compared to those wearing SCL (overall 74.9% vs. 67.6%; vision clarity 75.7% vs. 50.1%; correction satisfaction 79.7 vs. 62.0%; all p<0.05). Fitting time was similar for TCL and SCL (10.1 vs. 9.0 minutes, respectively) and there was no difference in number of lenses needed for a successful fit (an average of 1.2 for both).

The data were presented at the scientific research symposium of the British Contact Lens Association, which was held during the Netherlands Contact Lens Conference.
