For the first time in its 144-year history, the chairman of the Illinois College of Optometry’s (ICO) Board of Trustees is a woman. Dr. Karen Eng, President and CEO of engineering and consulting firm CSMI, was elected in October 2016. She had been a board member for six years and succeeds Dr. Donovan Crouch.

In her career, Dr. Eng has focused much of her energy on promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education with girls and women. “I am extremely honored and excited to have the opportunity to serve as the chairman,” said Dr. Eng. “We have been striving to build diversity on the board of trustees to represent our constituents, and I welcome the opportunity to champion this effort. My hope is to continue the strong leadership of the board of trustees, and to empower our next generation of optometrists.”
